***Bernoulli Society Membership Renewal and Poster

***New Bernoulli Society Scientific Secretary

Prof. Byeong Park will be stepping down as Bernoulli Society Scientific Secretary following his election as Vice President of the ISI. We congratulate him and are very grateful to him for his service to the Bernoulli Society in this role. 

The Council has approved Prof. Song Xi Chen (Peking University, http://english.gsm.pku.edu.cn/faculty/en/csx.html ) to replace Prof. Park as Scientific Secretary. The new Scientific Secretary, if approved by the Bernoulli GA at the 2019 WSC in Kuala Lumpur, will begin his term immediately after the WSC, completing Prof. Park's term which runs until the Bernoulli-IMS World Congress (August 2020). At that point he can be reappointed for the regular four-year term.

 

***New Bernoulli Society Treasurer

Lynne Billard will be stepping down at the end of this year from the position of Treasurer. The Bernoulli Society is grateful to her for her service! The Council has approved Prof. Geoffrey Grimmett (University of Cambridge,http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~grg/ )  to succeed Prof. Billard as Treasurer. The new Treasurer will start his four-year term as of January 1, 2020, pending final approval by the Bernoulli Society GA during the 2019 WSC in Kuala Lumpur.

 

***Short Course Program before WSC 2019

***Call for Interest in Hosting the Bernoulli-IMS 11th World Congress in 2024

***Book by Ole Barndorff-Nielsen 

The former President of the Bernoulli Society, Ole Eiler Barndorff-Nielsen, has recently published a book "Stochastics in Science: Some autobiographical notes" (published Forlaget Morgenstjerne) which can be of great interest for our community. Summary: "The book gives a kaleidoscopic view of the life of a mathematical scientist. It aims to provide an impression of how multifaceted and fascinating such a life can be, in relation to other scientists. Much of the book can be read without any background knowledge of mathematics, but here and there brief indications of the author's own work are included at stepping stones in the narration. It contains a gallery of remarkable personalities and of historical accounts not available elsewhere. And the author's intense interest in Richard Wagner's operas occasionally shines through."

The XXIII Escola Brasileira de Probabilidade will be held at the São Carlos campus of the University of São Paulo. EBP is a traditional international event which has been running since 1997 by initiative of the Brazilian probability community. The Congreso Latinoamericano de Probabilidad y Estadística Matemática (CLAPEM) is the official meeting of the Sociedad Latino Americana de Probabilidad y Estadística Matemática (SLAPEM), the Latin American Chapter of the Bernoulli Society. It is the major event in Probability and Statistics in the region and it gathers an important number of researchers and students, predominantly from Latin America. The call for contributed sessions is now open, as well as nominations for the Francisco Arnada Prize.

 

***10th Bernoulli-IMS World Congress in Probability and Statistics

The congress is the latest in a series organized jointly by the Bernoulli Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Held every four years, the Congress is a worldwide event covering all branches of statistics and probability. The latest scientific developments in all of these fields are showcased. It will be held at the Seoul National University.

The Bernoulli Society welcomes applications to the New Researcher Award 2020. This time the award will be in Probability Theory. Each awardee shall deliver a talk at a special invited session during the World Congress in Probability and Statistics 2020, and will receive a funding up to 1000€ to offset travel and other expenses. The European Meeting of Statisticians (EMS), sponsored by the European Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society, is the main conference in statistics and probability in Europe. EMS is a conference where statisticians of all ages and from all regions meet to exchange ideas and talk about the newest developments on the broad field of statistics and probability theory. ***21st European Young Statisticians Meeting

The European Young Statisticians Meetings are held every two years under the auspices of the European Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society. The idea of the meeting is to provide young researchers (less than thirty years of age or two to eight years of research experience) an introduction to the international scene within the broad subject area - from pure probability theory to applied statistics. Every participant is expected to submit an abstract and a short paper for conference proceedings and to give a twenty minutes talk introducing his/her research field to a wide audience.

The objective of ESREL 2019 is to provide an all-round inspiring environment and a multi-disciplinary forum for the exchange of knowledge and expertise on theories and methods in the field of risk, safety and reliability, and on their application to a wide range of industrial, civil and social sectors and problem areas. Congratulations to Professor Zhen-Qing Chen (University of Washington, Seattle, USA) and Professor Masatoshi Fukushima (Osaka University, Toyonaka, Japan), for their paper: Stochastic Komatsu-Loewner evolution and BMD domain constant, Stochastic Processes and Applications, Volume 128 (2018), 545-594. The latest scientific developments in all of these fields are showcased. It will be held at the Seoul National University.

***New Publicity Team
New publicity team: we welcome three new members in the publicity team of the Bernoulli Society. Soutir Bandyopadhyay (Colorado School of Mines) is succeeding Erik Baurdoux (London School of Economics) as Web Editor, and Carlos Améndola (TU Munich) is succeeding Corina Constantinescu (University of Liverpool) as E-Briefs Editor. ***2018 Doeblin Prize
Jason Miller is the recipient of the 2018 Doeblin Prize. The prize is sponsored by Springer and is awarded to a single individual for outstanding research in the field of probability, and who is at the beginning of his or her mathematical career. Dr. Miller will contribute an invited Wolfgang Doeblin Prize Article in PTRF and will present the Doeblin Prize Lecture at SPA 2019. Congratulations!  
 
*** Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award 2019
The response to the first edition of the Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award was fabulous. The awardees are Po-Ling Loh (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Gongjun Xu (University of Michigan) and Lingzhou Xue (Pennsylvania State University). 
***Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize 2018
